Fax Instructions

You need to first go into the control panel and into "Add or Remove Programs" then click "Add/Remove Windows Components" on the left of the window (see image at left). You can do so by going to Start>Control Panel and then (in classic view) double click "Add or Remove Programs" and in category view single-click the link "Add or Remove Programs" - third option in the left column.

Make sure "Fax Services" is checked as seen below (then click Next and follow it through):

Once that is done, you have this new option on your start menu:

Go into "Fax Console" the first time and you'll get a window that looks like this:

Then simply follow the easy-to-follow directions... Enter your contact information. Not all of it is required, though your full name and fax number are. Email address is recommended. Address I think is required, butit may only be recommended. Anyway, fill in at least those fields and any others you wish.

Next step: select the modem. This is generally a really easy step. Most computers only have one modem, so it defaults. So now you just have to choose a couple of things... Enable Send, Enable Receive, and Manual/Automatic, and number of rings. If you only have one phone line, below would be my recommendation:

TSID and CSID are going to be pretty much the same thing. Your name (or business name) and your phone number. I use my first name and my number. So for example: Adam ###-#### (replacing # with the actual numbers):

Next, it will ask you what you want to do with incoming faxes. Whether to print them or to save them on your hard drive for later. This one is personal preference:

So now it's back to the start menu. Go to Start>(All) Programs>Accessories>Communications>Fax>Send Fax (see below) - You'll also notice this doesn't allow for great big letters, either...

Upon clicking on the Send Fax, you get the wizard. Click next on the welcome screen. Input the recipient's name. Then their phone number. If it's a long distance call, check "Use dialing rules" - these were set up during modem installation. If you have an OEM system (such as HP, Compaq, Dell, etc) you may need to configure it yourself by clicking the "Dialing Rules" button on the far right:

This step allows you to choose a cover page. You can use any of them you wish. Just put in a subject and a little note.

This last one just asks when you wish to send the fax. It can be now or later. Take your pick.

After you click Next, it will give you one last screen where you can view the options and double check your settings before send.

There is one other way to send faxes. And that is as a printer. When it installed, it set up a printer called "Fax" that you can use in about any program. Word, Excel, Wordpad, Notepad, WordPerfect, Open Office, anything. Just use the File>Print or ctrl+p in Microsoft Office or it'll go to your default printer (which generally is not the fax, unless it's the only printer on there). Simply type up your letter, print it to fax, and the "Send Fax" wizard above will come up and you can input those settings again. Only this time, it will send whatever you tried to print. So you could have a 2-3 page fax, now.

Hope that helps anyone who may need it.
